About Ballpark Engineering

Ballpark Engineering is a PE-stamped engineering firm based in Mountain Green, Utah. We deliver PE-stamped drawings, foundation packages, and PE review for contractors, developers, and real estate professionals across UT, ID, WY, CO, NV, AZ, and MT.

Founded by Jaiden Olsen, PE. Many of our engineers built before they designed. That matters. It means designs that actually build, accurate to your local code, without over-engineering.

We move fast. We communicate like real people. We’ve invested heavily in proprietary tools and AI-assisted workflows so a small team delivers the volume and quality of a much larger firm. Our systems focus on engineering, people, and quality. Not admin.

Our trained team of drafters, optimized with the AI tools we’ve built in house, handles the production work. Our engineers handle the work that actually requires a PE.

About the Role

This is not a typical PE role. You are stepping in to lead the structural design function at Ballpark Engineering. Said plainly: your job is to free the founder by owning technical strategy, project oversight, and team execution across all active work.

You will not spend your days buried in calcs. You will spend them setting the game plan for each project, answering design questions from EITs and drafters, performing final QA, and stamping with confidence and clarity. You are a judgment-first engineer who thinks fast, speaks plainly, and balances code with constructability. You fight for client outcomes, not for plan checker approval.

Why This Role Is Different

You became a structural engineer because you actually like engineering. Then somewhere along the way, the week got buried under Revit edits, markup cycles, and emails you don’t have time to answer.

That is not the role we are hiring for.

At Ballpark, our engineers spend most of their week on engineering judgment and direct client work. Our trained team of drafters, optimized with the AI tools we’ve built in house, handles the production grind. Internal AI tools handle the repeatable work.

You focus on the part of the job AI does not replace: the calls that take engineering judgment, the conversations with the contractor, and your name on the final drawings.

What You Will Actually Do

Project Oversight

  • Own technical setup for new projects: load path strategy, design approach, delegation plan
  • Provide design direction to junior engineers and drafters
  • Manage QA and final deliverables, catching issues before they reach the city
  • Stamp drawings and reports in UT, ID, WY, CO, NV, and AZ as your licensure allows
  • Visit job sites across the Wasatch Front and Mountain West a few days per week

Team Leadership

  • Serve as the go-to for structural questions, mentoring EITs and enabling fast, confident decisions
  • Refine templates, workflows, and processes to reduce rework and accelerate delivery
  • Help interview, hire, and train engineers who think like you

Systems and Efficiency

  • Identify where proprietary tools and workflow improvements can eliminate friction
  • Build and improve SOPs, checklists, and QA tools
  • Partner with Operations to simplify project flow and client communication

Required Qualifications

  • Active UT PE license, or active PE in another state with willingness to obtain UT comity within 60 days of hire
  • 10 to 15 years of structural design experience, buildings-focused
  • Strong command of IBC, IRC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, NDS, AISC 360, TMS 402 (2018 to 2024 cycles)
  • Strong working knowledge of Mountain West design conditions: high seismic (SDC D), high ground snow loads, ice loads per ASCE 7 Chapter 10
  • Prior experience leading design teams or training junior engineers
  • Comfortable delegating, reviewing, and trusting others’ work without micromanaging
  • Strong written and verbal communication with clients, team members, and contractors

Preferred Qualifications

  • SE licensure
  • Multi-state PE licensure across our active states (UT, ID, WY, NV, AZ, CO, CA). Base salary scales with breadth of active licensure.
  • California PE, or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire (BPE reimburses fees on successful licensure)
  • Forensic and condition assessment experience: hail damage, structural distress, post-event reporting
  • Field background: framing, concrete, general contracting, or structural inspection
  • Comfort with rapidly evolving tools and workflows, balanced with professional rigor

Tools You Will Use Daily

  • Analysis: RISA, RAM, SAP2000, EnerCalc, Forte
  • Modeling and drafting: Revit, AutoCAD, occasional SketchUp
  • Field capture: MagicPlan, SiteScape
  • Project and document management: Asana, Egnyte, Bluebeam, Google Workspace
  • Communication and client systems: Slack, Zoom, GHL

We invest in modern tools and proprietary internal systems that eliminate the manual grind from production work. You will be expected to use them, improve them, and help us build new ones.

You Will Thrive Here If You

  • Take ownership of outcomes without being asked
  • Communicate clearly and directly, in writing and in person
  • Adapt fast when projects, codes, or priorities shift
  • Care about systems and process, not just calcs
  • Adopt new tools quickly and look for ways to make the team faster
  • Take initiative instead of waiting to be told
  • Thrive in fast-moving environments and protect your standards under pressure
  • Align with how we operate as a firm and how we treat our clients, our team, and our craft

First 90 Days: What Success Looks Like

  • Own setup and QA for active projects across multiple building types
  • Resolve team questions without escalation to the founder
  • Refactor at least one internal template or SOP that measurably speeds delivery
  • Lead client and team meetings independently
  • Stamp and send multiple deliverables with zero founder intervention

Why Join Ballpark

  • High autonomy and direct client impact
  • Clear path to Director of Engineering
  • Modern, proprietary tooling instead of archaic templates
  • Flexible work with results-first accountability
  • Compensation that scales with licensure and contribution

Compensation and Benefits

  • Base salary starting at $110K. Total comp target $130K to $165K for the right candidate.
  • Performance bonus tied to project outcomes and profitability. Not hours logged.
  • Multi-state licensure premium. Every additional active state PE you earn lifts your base salary.
  • Repeat-client account assignments. Senior engineers are paired with long-term client accounts, with bonuses tied to client retention and repeat project rates.
  • California PE licensure reimbursement on successful licensure. We cover application, NCEES exam, CA state-specific exams (Seismic and Engineering Surveying), fingerprinting, and issuance fees. Study courses and prep materials are the candidate’s responsibility.
  • Additional state PE applications reimbursed on successful licensure.
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off
  • 401(k) with employer match

Our Values

  • Extreme Ownership. We don’t pass problems. We solve them. Every team member owns the outcome.
  • Speed is a Value. We move with urgency and clarity. Deadlines are commitments, not suggestions.
  • Clarity Over Complexity. We simplify the chaos so our clients don’t have to. Simplicity is mastery.
  • Clear, Proactive Communication. We close loops early. We don’t wait to be asked. We don’t go dark.
  • Build Like You Own It. We think like investors, not just engineers. We protect client capital like it’s our own.
  • Honor the Trust. Trust is built slowly and lost fast. We protect it with integrity, always.
  • Train Like a Pro, Think Like a Founder. Every role is leadership. Every person is expected to grow.

Our Hiring Process

Three conversations, decisions within three weeks. We move fast and we’re honest about the steps.

  1. Short AI-assisted intake. Upload your resume and answer a few questions about your experience, licensure, and what you’re looking for in your next role.
  2. Conversation with Lori Trimble, Head of Strategy, Tech and Systems. Culture fit, working style, and what you want from your career.
  3. Final conversation with Jaiden Olsen, PE, Founder and Principal Engineer. Technical depth, project ownership, and a real conversation about the work.

If both sides see a fit, we make an offer. No eight-stage corporate runaround.
